Launched in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level extension is the only one intended for personal web pages only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At first, just third-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to buy john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought third-level names remained running.
